I heard of a monster hammer draging a truck backwards down a boat launch ramp before. Apparently they were trying to drag it out of the water and the shark decided to swim away draging the truck that was in gear, backwards.

That's a properly serviced 50w with some tweaks. Proven to work well :D, even for monster hammer like that.

I cant help myself :o it just seems I have been a part of to many discussions where I have been told things like a 12 foot hammer is going to smoke any 50w or its impossible to catch a 12 foot hammer on a 50w. I am just happy that a 50w has been thrown in the mix for BIG sharks and come out on top 8-) I mean no disrespect to the guys that said it cant be done. I am sure with the more people fishing new age 50W this wont be the last report of monsters on 50Ws.

Remember that pier in that one place a half a century ago? You don't! Oh that's right some fisherman tied 1,000,000,000lb test mono-filament to it and put out old Moe and old Hitler out for bait and the next day everyone came to fish the pier and saw it mysteriously being dragged into the ocean. To this day there are reports from submarines of a huge hammerhead shark dragging around a big pier... The legend of Old Bob lives on!

Just an average fisherman.

The success is in the details. Usually when they refer to a 50w they may refer to a reel that can handle at full spool around 25lb-30lb drag, but when you get 55lb-65lb out of an 50w at full spool, that's a hole new class right there. An 8ft-8.5ft hammerhead was caught from same location while BHC was still on. The fish had a maxim run of 150yds at 50lb drag and 20-25min later was right next to the piers pilings for a photo session. Around same length of shark couple hours later snapped the braided line at the tip of the rod (no knot), which means that not always playing at high drag will give you success with braided line. The speed of the fish plays a huge role on how much tension overall the fish generates.
Jonathan has good karma when comes to landing big fish, maybe that's the reason why he came second place on overall the biggest fish caught in BHC tournament.

Im with ya Man!!! I fish old penn 50Ws that can barley get 30lbs with full spool and new Avets that can pull 60lbs at full spool. New age 50Ws spooled in 130+ lb combos can catch big, BIG fish.

Just like you said "The success is in the details" people with 50ws fishing straight 60-80lb mono and 25lbs of drag its just not going to happen, but people fishing 50s with 130 lb braid and mono top shots with the ability to use/ understand heavy drag, its on!!

I am a huge braid 50W believer, I fish lots of 130 and 200lb braid backed with shorter top shots in the 100-300 yards of 130 mono backed with long windons and heavy traces. here latley I have been going with 200lb JB hollow to 130 Izor first string 20-50 foot 200lb windons on a 80W... preset with a 58-60lb drag at full.
